Every summer the hot topic is summer learning loss! This is going to be even bigger this summer as Covid-19 has derailed the last 2-3 months of kid’s education. So here is the simple way to keep kids learning this summer and avoid summer learning loss.

According to recent studies kids can lose over 30% of reading gains and 50% of math gains over the summer months!

We all know parents play a critical role in a child’s education. We are even more sure after the Covid-19 forced families to home school. Summer is no different.

We must keep our kids learning. But it’s not as difficult and scary as you might think to avoid summer learning loss.

SIMPLE METHOD TO KEEP KIDS LEARNING

Just 20-30 minutes a day is all you need. I’m totally serious. You are not introducing new topics as much as reviewing past learning.

I use this book called Summer Bridge Activities! These books are awesome. It has one or two pages for each days work that only take about 15 minutes!

They are only about $10 each and come with bonus stickers, flash cards and a little certificate of completion! They are available for Kindergarten to grade 8. Definitely check them out!

MAKE TIME FOR LEARNING

So here is the summer schedule I made for me and my kids:

kids daily summer schedule to avoid summer learning loss

This schedule leaves room for late movie nights and sleeping in a little bit more. I have been trying it out for the last 2 weeks and it has worked great.

The kids don’t fight me because it’s only 20-30 minutes which is usually 1-2 work sheets/activities. I like to incorporate learning with summer fun. Like drawing math problems with calk on the drive way.

Remember we are only trying to avoid summer learning loss not teach the next grade!

Keep in mind this schedule is for those days we aren’t on a vacation, visiting family or traveling! There is no need to ruin your planned vacations stressing about keeping up the schedule.

I hope this helps you avoid summer learning loss! Let me know your thought or suggestions!
