We are all told babies are expensive. But exactly how expensive? I decided to find out exactly how much money we spent in the first year on diapers for our fourth son from March 2019 to March 2020. So here is exactly how much the first year of diapers costs.
I buy all of our diapers from Amazon. So I was able to go back and look at my entire purchase history. I could see the size I bought, the number of diapers and the cost!

COST OF DIAPERS FOR A YEAR
We use Luvs diapers. They are a little less expensive and we have never had an issue with them. However they don’t seem to make newborn so I did use Huggies newborn diapers until he was big enough for size 1 Luvs.
So here we go! Drum roll please!
We spent $415.51 on diapers for my son’s first year of life from March 2019 or March 2020!
Honestly I’m surprised. I thought it would be way more! Don’t get me wrong $415.51 is a lot of money but over the course of a year it’s actually not that bad. $415.51 divided by 12 is $34.63 per month!
Now if I were doing the Huggies or Pampers brand I’m sure that number would be much more like $600.
The total number of diapers My son used in his first year was 2742! Now that is a lot of diapers!
I also did the math of how many diapers me and my husband have probably changed during the course of parenthood.
We have 4 boys, three of which potty trained around three. Accounting for the decrease in the number of diapers used in a day as they got older we have changed about…..22,868 diapers!!!
Now that is A LOT of diapers!
HOW MANY DIAPERS OF EACH SIZE WILL YOU NEED?
We used 3 boxes of Huggies newborn diapers. Each box had 140 diapers in it so a total of 420 newborn diapers!
We used 3 boxes of Luvs diapers in size 1. Each box had 252 diapers in it so a total of 756! The most out of all the sizes. I always thought we used the most of size three but the numbers don’t lie. My son was average weight and size so this is probably accurate for you too.
I think babies just start to soil their diapers less times in a day so they are in the larger sizes longer which makes us think they are going through more of those diapers.
We used 2 boxes of Luvs size 2. Each box had 228 so a total of 456.
We used 3 boxes of Luvs size 3. Each box had 198 so a total of 594.
And finally we used 3 boxes of size 4 diapers. Each box had 172 diapers so a total of 516.
